Why is it that when anyone comes up with a sensible proposal which will improve things for the community, there is always somebody who will whinge, moan and say it can’t be done?

I refer of course to the letter from Mr A Bond (Free Press August 4) criticising Mr de Mendoza and his team’s proposal to investigate the possibility of running diesel trains between Taunton and Minehead.

Of course it is far easier to say it can’t be done than to try, and I’m sure George Stephenson and Isambard Kingdom Brunel had their share of the Victor Meldrews of the day when they originally proposed a rail network all those years go.

If we listened to the Victor Meldrews, we’d still be living in caves and mud huts because we would have thwarted all attempts to better our quality of life, be it railways, electricity, radio, medical science – even the wheel itself.
