STAFF at Tesco’s in Minehead will no longer work at night to replenish stock, it was announced this week, in line with changes at 69 stores around the country.

A spokesman for the company said on Wednesday that, nationally, the company expected the vast majority of staff to stay on and move to daytime working instead.

He said the company was consulting with employees and, until they knew the outcome, they could not give figures for Minehead, or anywhere, of any potential job losses due to the change.

Tesco UK chief executive officer Matt Davies said in a statement that the company appreciated the changes would impact the roles of some staff, and the company would work with them to ensure they were fully supported throughout this period.

The changes in the stores, including Minehead, aimed to help the company run them more simply and deliver best possible service for customers, the company said.

Feedback from customers had shown they wanted more people in-store, and the changes were to further improve services.

They followed on from changes last year to help simplify how stores operate, with the aim of improving customers’ shopping trip, and the company found they made a real difference.

Tesco was now looking at further improvements to the service model in its UK stores, moving from the night to day replenishment in 69 stores and also bringing together different service desks in one place.

Where similar changes had been made, Tesco had started to see the benefits, the company said – freeing up more time to focus on service and ensuring stores were at their best when at their busiest.
