SIR — At last, in Nicky Messara, we will have a mayor who, as a Tory, brings Conservative values to Minehead and has a direct and refreshing approach to getting things done. I would personally be pleased to see graffiti cleaned away from the wall near the Esso garage - which, by the way has been there for over four months - and chewing gum cleared from our pavements; shopkeepers encouraged to keep a smart facade; toilets cleaned regularly; the promenade smartened up, seats painted, shelters repaired. At the moment if these are vandelised they are left unrepaired. We live in a "Why bother town" and I would like to think that with Nicky as our mayor we could be encouraged to think differently and realise that each stitch in time makes for a tighter woven community. With a better will and someone to organise and equip willing workers, our town can be kept in better order. The yob culture is actually a small minority but if we all turn a blind eye and bury our heads in the sand we will increasingly live in a town that is ruled by this yobbish mentality. If something is vandalised, repair it asap. Graffiti that is left daubed on buildings gives encouragement to those who put it there and increases the likelihood that others will desire to seek to use the same method of self- advertisement. Nicky Messara has shown that he desires the best for Minehead and a lot of people have been pleased with his direct and sincere approach to getting things done. This is a man who dislikes red tape and as such has been welcomed as a man for the people. Peter Phillips, Mount Royal, Minehead.
