WORK carried out by Exmoor Paths Partnership is to be boosted by a new fundraising idea.

Biketrail, the latest business to join the partnership, hires out cycles to visitors from its outlets at Lynton and along the Tarka Trail, including special bikes for people with disabilities.

It has proposed that income generated from the hire of these special bikes be donated to the Exmoor Paths Partnership.

The money would be used to carry out specific path improvements for those who currently find it difficult to access the countryside.

Duncan Wise, of the Exmoor Paths Partnership, said: "We are extremely grateful for this wonderful commitment and wish the venture well.

"Biketrail's proposal will foster a closer connection between the user and the environment, as they will see the benefits from their activity contributing to improving countryside access on Exmoor.

"Biketrail is to be applauded for adopting this sustainable approach to its plans and seeing the long term benefits for the environment, themselves and for others."

The path erosion team will liaise with Biketrail to decide where improvements can be made.

Sue Oakley, of Biketrail, said: "Our focus is to make cycling easy and enjoyable for all ages and abilities. We are committed to preserving the environment in this unique part of Britain whilst enabling more visitors to enjoy its beauty.

"This joint venture will make it possible for people with disabilities who have hitherto been unable to use some of the paths on Exmoor to more fully explore and enjoy the wonderful scenery of the national park."

Five new route maps have been put together by Exmoor Paths Partnership, the Pinkery Centre and Biketrail for cyclists with disabilities.

They include a route taken by more than 100 riders, including local schoolchildren and a group from London, on a ride from Malmsmead to Robbers Bridge to mark the opening of the new National Cycle Network.

Biketrail has close links with various charities such as the Back Up Trust for people with spinal injuries, The Calvert Trust on Exmoor, the Downs Syndrome Association and the Royal Variety Club Children's Charity.

Maps of the five routes are available from Biketrail's shop in Lynton or by phoning 01598 752490. Information about Exmoor Paths Partnership is available from Mr Wise on 01398 266368.
