A police officer who was once driven over by a car when trying to stop criminals, has started work as the new sector inspector for Yeovil.

Inspector Mike Edwards took over on May 31st from inspector Trevor Ashford.

Inspector Edwards joined Avon and Somerset Constabulary in 1984, giving up a career in the oil industry to become a police officer.

He spent his 12 first years in the Bristol area and was commended by the chief constable in 1987 after he was driven over and injured when trying to prevent offenders from fleeing Broadmead Shopping Centre in Bristol.

In 1991 he was awarded the Royal Humane Society Award by the High Sheriff of Bristol for saving a man from drowning in Bristol City Docks.

This year he has been nominated for another RHS Award following an incident during which he prevented a man from jumping off a factory rooftop.

Talking about his aims for his Yeovil posting, he said: "Yeovil is already a successful sector and has achieved significant inroads in reducing home burglaries.

"I intend to build on this success and serve the sector the best I can."
