THEY travelled the world on the decks of ships before landing up on Watchet’s East Quay.

Now the three massive shipping containers, which have been the hub of the town’s artistic community for the past six years as the home of Contains Art, have moved on.

They were hauled off the quay last Tuesday to spend the next two years on the Wansbrough paper mill site, before returning as a feature of the £7 million East Quay development which is due to start building in the next few weeks.

Converted into a gallery and four artists’ studios, Contains Art has hosted over 50 exhibitions and hundreds of events ranging from workshops to children’s art days and pop-up restaurants.

“The success of Contains Art is the key to almost everything we have done since, and was a major inspiration behind our current East Quay development,” said Onions Collective director Georgie Grant.

“When the containers return to the site early in 2021 they will remain an important part of the whole scheme. The quay wouldn’t be the same without them.”

Georgie said that two of the refurbished containers will be offered to budding artists as cheaper workspace and the third will probably be used for storage.
