IF anyone knows where the town crier’s hat is, Minehead Museum would like to hear from them.

The team of volunteers is also trying to track down the large lantern that used to stand at the end of Minehead harbour but was taken down in the 1970s, when the old gun emplacement was removed.

The museum, housed in the Beach Hotel, was recently granted charitable status and is now planning ways to raise funds and develop.

The museum will open for its fourth season in March, and it recently acquired all kinds of papers, photographs and the town crier’s uniform from Minehead Town Council.

“It’s very splendid and has to be preserved and displayed properly – but if anyone knows where the hat is, we would be grateful,” said Janet Styles, one of the volunteers who staff and manage the museum.

People are invited to join as volunteers, to become Friends of the Museum, give talks and to donate online through localgiving.org – for which the Government helps with matched funds.

In the short term, the museum is seeking funding for booklets about aspects of Minehead.

Meanwhile, an artefacts day is being held on March 28 when people may bring along items of interest that can be assessed for potential donation.

The museum will open on the last two weekends of March, and then from March 28 for six days a week.
