The Dovery Manor Museum in Porlock has already staged several successful exhibitions and events commemorating those from the village who served in the First World War.

As we finally approach the centenary of the end of the Great War this November, the museum has launched an ambitious project to try to identify each and every man from Porlock who joined up, serving at home or abroad, and the women who joined the support services, the nurses and orderlies and drivers.

The official registers show that six months into the war, Porlock already had 62 men serving in the ranks, the highest percentage for any of the large villages and towns in West Somerset.

By the end of the war, this number had more than doubled to almost 150, with a number of women also serving.

The museum is keen to hear from anyone who can help identify these men and women, anyone who has family memories, memorabilia, photos or any other information. Please contact me on 01643 863083 or by email to [email protected].
