THE bonds of unity between the seven churches of Quantock Towers benefice have been strengthened by the creation of a new banner. It was the idea of Mothers' Union members when Bicknoller, Crowcombe, Elworthy, Monksilver, Nettlecombe, Sampford Brett and Stogumber came together. They all had a hand in making the new banner which was dedicated at a service in Stogumber church on July 31. Embroiderers Gail Griffith and Jane Sefton designed and made the banner to illustrate the Mothers' Union objectives in support of Christian Family Life, whilst evoking the beauty of the countryside within the benefice. Each branch member was encouraged to sew a few stitches in the banner - some were glad to place theirs where they would not easily be noticed! As a further sign of unity, the names of the seven villages have been written on the reverse of the banner by calligrapher Gillian King. The banner, which has a new oak stand made by Jeff Duddridge, will be displayed for two months of the year in each of the six parish churches in full use within the benefice. It will also be taken to Mothers' Union services and other events where a procession of banners is called for.
