TRUSTEES from the Dulverton Weir & Leat Conservation Trust (DWLCT) welcomed local MP Rachel Gilmour and her team to the Dulverton Urban Watermill Landscape (Dulverton Weir & Leat) on Wednesday, September 24.

The MP for Tiverton and Minehead Mrs Gilmour spent several hours viewing the weir and leat and working with trustees on how best to support the restoration project going forward.

Mrs Gilmour said: “The Dulverton Weir & Leat Project is probably the biggest project on Exmoor in a generation. I am fully committed to supporting this project, which – upon completion – will have a positive impact on the local community, businesses, and tourism in and around Dulverton.

“Local groups, such as the Dulverton Weir & Leat Conservation Trust are at the heart of our communities - their shared purpose provides the glue which sticks our communities together. I look forward to working with them.”

Established in 2016, the Trust has been working with other interest groups to save Dulverton’s weir and leat from collapse by carrying out vital restoration works. Widely recognised as ‘the best-preserved medieval leat in England’, the weir and leat have attracted interest from across the UK – showcasing Somerset’s historic industrial and engineering heritage.

DWLCT lead trustee Philip Hull said: “We were delighted that Rachel and her team spent a significant amount of time visiting the project and are very appreciative of their help and support.”
