SIR — Re the dilemma facing All Saints' Church in Dulverton, should the modernists have their way with vehicular access through the churchyard or not?

The modernists won hands down.

Vehicular access will make it easy for the church to be used for concerts, coffee mornings and a printing enterprise, which inevitably takes business away from local firms.

The church will be accessible to all, just what today's Church of England is all about.

Lancelot Andrewes, preaching before King James on December 25 1622, was prescient when he said "The nearer the Church, the farther from God."
