AN estimated 1,000 people turned up to have some fun in the sun in Minehead's Blenheim Gardens on Saturday.

The town's first 'Party in the Park' was hailed a huge success by organisers, Minehead Rotarians David and Delia Paveling.

"We hope the first Party in the Park will not be the last and that the late summer bank holiday weekend could see further development of this event," said Mrs Paveling.

"People arrived from all sides of the gardens to visit the stalls or join in the party activities.

"And stallholders reported very good takings, with one local trader returning to sell her entire shop stock at the event."

The mix of live music coupled with children's entertainment, face painting, story telling, giant bubble blowing and stalls - some embracing the party theme - proved a winning combination.

A competition to find the best 'Kids Party Outfit' was won by the Price family from Dunster and Mrs Paveling said she hoped more youngsters would be spurred on to take part next year.

And on the music front, a fine balance of styles and instruments ensured there was something to suit all tastes.

"We had a great bunch of local musicians keeping the feet tapping all day," said Mr Paveling, who co-ordinated the line-up of bands and artists.

"There were 'Shadows' instrumentals, jazz singing, folk and country sing-alongs, as well as original rock compositions alongside traditional rock and roll classics."

Mrs Paveling said she hoped the success of the event and other attractions would help Blenheim Gardens secure future funding for further development of what was a valuable asset to the town.

"It is such a perfect setting for music and family fun," she said.

"We must use the gardens for the benefit of everyone and as a major tourist attraction in the town."
