MINEHEAD businesses are bouncing back since they were allowed to re-open after the lockdown and could be ‘on the right side of recovery’, a traders’ organisation reported this week.

Weekly recorded statistics logged by the footfall monitors installed by Minehead Business Improvement District show a definite improvement in high street trade as visitors and residents return to the town.

“When a relaxation to restrictions took place last summer, we saw a brief footfall rise to near pre-pandemic numbers, but this was short-lived,” said Graham Sizer, Minehead BID chairman.

“The footfall data for June and so far in July has already superseded even those recorded in August last year. While we are currently lacking the West Somerset Railway using Minehead station and full capacity at Butlin’s, it is very encouraging that even against this backdrop we can report such robust news.

“As we now go into the peak season, traders will be hoping the trend continues, but a lack of staff has now become a problem for many.

“Many parts of the region have experienced a similar challenge. The hospitality sector has been particularly affected. Recruitment is now a critical issue for many.”

Mr Sizer added: “The town looks very presentable, with additional bunting and floral displays added this year as Minehead continues to punch above its weight.

“But as we come out of lockdown it has thrown up new and unexpected challenges. It will take a while for things to settle but at least we are on the right side of recovery.”
