MINEHEAD Cricket club's first ever under 9s cricket competition took place last Friday.
Thanks to sponsorship from Beaver Auto Care, the club was able to stage a successful tournament between four local first schools and a Minehead Cricket Club side.
Knights Templar swept the board as all the teams played against each other in some keenly contested matches.
Each game was closely contested and the result wasn't clear until the very last game, which saw Knights Templar requiring a large winning margin against Dunster with St Michael's waiting to see if they were to become overall winners having completed all their games.
Knights Templar managed the required number of runs and so pipped St Michael's with a superior run rate.
Third overall were St Dubricius' from Porlock.
A prize for the most promising young cricketer went to Jacob Lintott from Knights Templar, while a cricketer from each team was chosen as player of the tournament and given a skills practice cricket ball.
They were Jake Pound (Dunster), Ryan Jones (Knights Templar), Chris Webber (Minehead CC), James Mead (St Dubricius') and Jacob Cable (St Michael's).
A Minehead Cricket Club spokesman said: "It would be nice to hold a tournament of this type again, with more schools and cricket clubs, and maybe stage a festival of youth cricket.
"We as a club are certainly looking to continue our involvement with youth cricket development.
"Here at Minehead we run a number of coaching programs for all ages and would like to look into the prospect of staging such an event.
"If any local business or clubs are able to help or can provide us with some sponsorship for such an event then please contact the club."
