ACTOR John Nettles – the Bergerac and Midsomer Murders detective – entertained more than 100 people dining at the Tithe Barn in Dunster, raising more than £7,000 for the NSPCC.

Invited by South Quantocks branch committee member Angela Orchard-Lisle, John’s after-dinner talk lasted about an hour and included hilarious anecdotes about his time as an actor, historian and author.

Although principally a Shakespearian actor, he played Jim Bergerac in the Jersey TV series of the 1980s and Tom Barnaby in Midsomer Murders. Both series were resounding successes, with 87 episodes of Bergerac and 81 episodes of Midsomer Murders.

He said that someone had remarked to him that the only link between all the Midsomer Murders was Tom Barnaby, meaning inevitably that he must be the murderer himself!

Branch chairman Frances Vail later gave a speech about the NSPCC, outlining the essential work that was being carried out by the charity for the many vulnerable children at risk.

Angela said: “We were delighted with how generous John was with his time and very grateful for his support for the NSPCC. “
