FLOOD warnings and alerts remain in place for parts of Somerset as a new weather warning for heavy rain has been issued by the Met Office.

A flood warning is in place on the River Tone, near Taunton, while alerts have also been issued for parts of the Somerset Levels and the West Somerset Coast.

More heavy rain is expected to increase the risk of flooding in already affected areas, with forecasters issuing a yellow warning for rain across the South West which will be in force from midnight until 3pm tomorrow (March 1).

The Environment Agency warned on Thursday that flooding was expected in West Moor, Hay Moor and Curry Moor, including New Road between North Curry and the A361, and Cutts Road at East Lyng.

In guidance last updated on Wednesday afternoon, the agency said pumping was taking place at Currymoor, Saltmoor and Northmoor pumping stations, with Cutts Road and New Road closed as a precaution.

In a statement a spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: “The situation is being continually monitored and staff are checking the condition of flood banks, spillways and weed screens.

“Please refer to TravelSomerset for information on local road closures, and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.”

A flood alert for Horner Water, Rivers Aller and Washford, and the Hawkcombe, Monksilver and Doniford Streams and tributaries remained in place this morning.

An Environment Agency spokesperson said work was ongoing to clear culverts for blockages and water levels remained under observation: “We will continue to monitor the rainfall and water levels closely, and are checking weed screens, bridges and culverts for blockages.

“Please avoid using low lying footpaths near local watercourses, and remain aware of water levels and weather conditions. You should avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.”
