SIR — Last week saw a questionnaire put on the Taunton Deane and West Somerset websites to establish opinion about their proposed merger.

Presumably it aims to find the opinions of those who will be affected by it, namely those living in Taunton Deane and West Somerset.

However, although there is a surprising abundance of impertinent and irrelevant questions to establish social, racial and religious background, there are none to establish identity or address.

Besides meaning that the figures derived from this research are meaningless, as those with energy and commitment can fill in the questionnaire as often as they wish, it makes me wonder what the leaders intend to do with the replies they get.

I have a sinking feeling the answer might be “nothing”.

I would like to ask both the leaders how they intend to act on the responses. For example - if a majority (or even a significant number) of the respondents answer No to question 1 (do you support the proposal for creating one new council . . . ?), what will they do?
