A SILVER finger ring found by a man in Carhampton has officially been declared treasure.

The post medieval piece of jewellery was discovered by Chris Lovell.

And at an inquest in Minehead on Tuesday West Somerset assistant deputy coroner Tim Hayden ruled that the ring could be returned to its finder - unless any objections were received in the following 28 days.

Technically, all hidden treasure in the UK belongs to the Queen.

But Mr Hayden said the Secretary of State had indicated that the Crown did not propose to make a claim on the ring.

He said he was able to declare its status as treasure because it was more than 300 years old and contained more than ten per cent of precious metal.
