WATCHET pensioner Cliff Billing has been forced to pull out of tomorrow's Watchet Gardening Club show after a thief stole his prized marrow. Mr Billing was left distraught after his lovingly tended marrow was stolen from his allotment alongside the town's Royal British Legion Club. "I was devastated to find that someone had stolen vegetables from my allotment," he said. "I am a pensioner and have put a lot of hard work in to growing my own produce. "If the person responsible had had the decency to ask I might have given them some vegetables. "As it is, I have contacted the Royal British Legion and the police and will most probably cancel my plot in the future." Mr Billing's wife Brenda said the theft must have happened on Monday evening or Tuesday morning as her husband regularly visited the allotment to tend his produce. "It's very sad that something like this should happen. It's soul destroying for him," she said. The thief also stole carrots from Mr Billings plot, which was also targeted by thieves last year. Mrs Billing said she did not think it was a deliberate act of sabotage, even though her husband had been forced to pull out of the gardening show. "I don't think anyone is as vicious as that around here," she said. "I suspect it's more likely to be someone who has had a few pints and been on their way home. "But whoever did it should be ashamed of what they have done." Photo: Steve Guscott.
