FATHER of two Andy Rock struck a new record when he was among the thousands of runners who crossed the finishing line of the London Marathon last Sunday. But it will probably be the musical talents of the the 45-year-old from East Quantoxhead that will go down in the history books rather than his athletic prowess. Andy had pledged to run the 26-mile course while playing an accordion if he managed to exceed his £2,500 fundraising target. And with more than £4,000 in the coffers by the start of the race, he had no choice but to play to the crowd. "Even then I wasn't actually planning to play the accordion for the full 26 miles," he said. "But what I wasn't expecting was 26 miles of people shouting 'give us a tune accordion man' so I had to oblige and play constantly." True to his word, Andy provided a musical background for his fellow runners and the spectators for the six hours, four minutes and 28 seconds it took him to complete the course. "Would I do it again?" he said. "Definitely not with an accordion. "It was a ridiculous idea but at least I did it quicker than the bloke carrying the fridge - we had a sprint finish to the end. "I've never played the accordion for that long but then I've never run that far either. "It was tough and trying to run while playing a musical instrument was certainly a challenge. "But the atmosphere was brilliant and it was certainly worth doing it." Andy hopes to have raised around £4,500 in total, with all the money going to boost the funds of Penny Brohn Cancer Care in Bristol, a charity which helps people live with the impact of the disease. Andy's wife Rachel has been supported by the charity whilst battling cancer three times over the past 16 years. Rachel and the couple's two children, ten-year-old Rio and Romany, eight, travelled to London to cheer him on. "The biggest inspiration was having Rachael, Rio and Romany cheering me on at mile 13 and again at mile 21 - they had a great time and I think they're proud of me." Andy, who runs Bicknoller-based herb and apple juice company Herby4, is still hoping to attract more donations and anyone wanting to boost his fundraising tally can do so online at http://www.justgiving.com/andrew-rock">www.justgiving.com/andrew-rock or by text on ROKY52 £1 to £10 to 70070.
