THE magic of Christmas came to Dulverton By Starlight on Sunday for the annual festive event that saw everything from magicians to a tree trail, a brass band to Father Christmas himself.

He took to his grotto and welcomed children to the town’s Heritage Centre, while visitors oohed and ahed at shop windows that were a blaze of light and colour as they took part in a window dressing competition.

Twenty-six charities and organisations around the town put on a special Christmas tree trail – each decorating trees on a theme connected with what they do, from the Royal British Legion to the town tennis club.

Two different magicians, Captain Coconut and Merlin the Magician, were on hand to delight visitors; author Victoria Eveleigh gave book readings; there was face painting; music of all kinds and a wide range of market stalls, food and drink to enjoy.

“We had lots of brilliant volunteers,” said local businesswoman Emily Kaye, one of the organisers.

“The weather put a few people off but it was a very successful event and everyone had a lovely time.”

And there is still a chance to hunt for three sugar mice with bells on their ribbons in a special competition for children that runs until the end of December. Details are available from the Visitor Centre.
