SIR — In response to the letter from Doug Human regarding a flood plan in Williton (Free Press February 28): 14 months ago the village had nothing. No plan.

There were people driven out of their homes and no-one could answer questions on how, when and where to get things sorted.

The parish council got all the agencies together at a public meeting, which residents were able to attend and air their views. This led to a lot of work being done by several groups and individuals, liaising with landlords and housing associations to get work done on their land.

We also had meetings with the Environment Agency to ensure we were acting within the law and safely.

Contrary to the belief of some, you cannot just walk out into rivers as you wish. There are safety issues to be considered.

We now have a plan, and it is hoped to have all of the volunteer wardens together to brief them and then they will be suitably aware of their tasks.

The parish council has the responsibility for the whole of the parish and, whilst I understand some people's frustrations on not moving quicker, I will say to them look at the big picture, not a few hundred yards that particularly affects you.

I am aware of the work that has been done by a particular group, because I was briefed on what their intentions were. I would like to say well done, because 14 months ago you would never have thought of doing and achieving what you have achieved.

If it is your intention to continue, the parish council will be more than happy to work with you to establish a continued programme of repairs and renovations on all of the streams.

Cllr Eddie May and I are due to meet with the agents for the Wyndham Estate to discuss the way forward when the weather improves. We hope there will be volunteers to help. We will publish dates and the wardens will be involved.

Copies of the plan will shortly be available on the parish council website.

Cllr Robert MacDonald,

Chairman,

Williton Parish Council.
