TWO Lithuanian women had to be rescued by coastguards after getting stuck on a cliff off Warren Bay near Watchet.

The pair, aged 22 and 23, had been on the beach with a group of friends at about 10pm on Tuesday evening when they became separated after stopping to take photographs.

As darkness fell the girls were unable to find their way back to the Warren Bay Holiday Park where they were staying.

Fearing the tide was coming in they began to clamber up the cliff, but realising it was too steep, they decided to sit tight and wait for daylight.

Unbeknown to them, their absence had already been noticed at the park and the police and coastguards had been called in to search for them.

They were eventually located just after 3am on Wednesday morning and coastguards were able to guide them off the cliff and back to the safety of their campsite.

Coastguard Simon Bale said: "No one was injured, but both females were shocked and extremely grateful to the emergency services for finding them.

"Coastguards would like again to remind anyone venturing on the beach, especially at night, to remain in groups and to carry suitable equipment, including torches and mobile phones.

"If they don't have local knowledge they should check the area in daylight first to get their bearings or some understanding of where they are going."
