YOUNG people who give their time - and childhood - to looking after someone else could be given a break thanks to Minehead and West Somerset Lions Club. As part of their work to support local children's charities and youth organisations in West Somerset, the club has awarded £250 to Jo Sylvester, project team leader for Somerset Young Carers (SYC) for Bridgwater and West Somerset. SYC supports 300 young people aged eight to 18 who are looking after someone in West Somerset. The young carers may be helping a family member who is disabled, ill or has problems with drugs, alcohol or mental health. SYC offers respite support by arranging days out, and a holiday of events and activities is arranged during school holidays to meet other children and give them their childhood back. Anyone who knows of a young person in this situation is asked to contact Jo Sylvester on 01278 437368 or 07919 540411.
