THERE was a special present for Jim Thompson-Brown when he celebrated his 94th birthday – he was introduced to his Somerset Sight volunteer visitor.

Somerset Sight is the independent charity which provides practical support and advice to sight impaired people across Somerset.

Much of this is provided by volunteer visitors, and Jim, of Minehead, was teamed up with Lilian Harding.

Jim travelled the world during his 22 years in the Navy and has lived in Minehead for nearly 20 years, working in his retirement within the local area.

“I know the streets of Minehead very well and am looking forward to exploring some of them again with my Somerset Sight volunteer and having her company.

“What a lovely birthday present to meet Lilian!” he said.

Having been so active and independent all his life, Jim now finds his substantial sight loss very restricting and is looking forward to Lilian’s visits.

Jim also enjoys going to Somerset Sight’s friendly social group once a month in Bancks Street on a Monday afternoon where he meets other people with sight loss and enjoys the social contact.

Somerset Sight head office is on 01823 333818.
