A 23-YEAR-OLD cyclist who is living on less than £5 a day this week rode through West Somerset as part of a 4,000-mile trip around Britain’s coastline to raise awareness of men’s mental health and suicide.
Lewis Stephens has undertaken the fundraising feat for CALM – the Campaign Against Living Miserably – an award-winning men’s mental health charity, and has already raised several hundred pounds.
Aiming to cycle 50 miles a day, he has limited himself to a £5-a-day living allowance and relies on strangers for accommodation.
“As soon as I tell people about the charity and what I am doing, you would be surprised how many people agree to help out,” he said.
He said his motivation was the growing crisis in men’s mental health and added: “CALM run a suicide-prevention hotline. I’ve had friends and family who have suffered and have been directly affected by suicide and that put me strongly behind the cause.
“It’s not hard to notice that men’s mental health is getting worse. It’s the biggest killer of men under 40.”
