THE memory of a Porlock woman who died earlier this year has inspired a couple to take part in a charity fund-raising 10k run in Lincolnshire later this month.

Wendy Dorrill, who died in May, was well-known in the village, particularly for her work in Porlock Visitor Centre.

What was less well-known was that she suffered for most of her life with polycystic kidneys, a disease which causes the kidneys to enlarge and lose function over time.

The condition has been inherited by Mrs Dorrill’s daughter Clare Parrott, who lives in South Kelsey, Lincolnshire, and whose own kidney function is progressively deteriorating.

Now, Clare and husband Nick are training to run in the Lincoln 10k on October 30 to raise money for the Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD) Charity, which supports people affected by the condition, raises awareness, and funds research.

Mr Parrott said: “With the same stoic attitude to life and the determination Wendy tirelessly displayed, Clare will run alongside me raising funds to help find a cure for this disease, her mother firmly in our hearts.”

PKD chief executive Tess Harris said: “We are delighted Nick and Clare are taking on the challenge of the Lincoln 10k for PKD Charity.

“We could not provide the support that we do to anybody affected by polycystic kidney disease without wonderful fund-raisers like Nick and Clare.

“The money they raise by taking on this challenge will help to support those affected and it will help to raise awareness and fund research into this condition.

“Kidney research is critically under-funded. In the UK, less than one per cent of all health research funding goes to kidney research and a fraction of that amount goes towards PKD research specifically.

“New treatments for PKD are needed now, as 70,000 adults and children in the UK may have polycystic kidney disease.

“This life-threatening inherited condition can cause renal failure and affect other organs in the body.”
