SIR — I read in the Free Press of May 25 that Minehead Town Council, with some input from district, still has the possibility of a ferry between Minehead and South Wales under review.

It is right to keep an eye on the subject, but I was reassured that district councillor Lillis has said that if the idea is shown to be unviable it should be "knocked on the head once and for all".

The last in-depth look at the possibilities was so recent that the situation has not changed much since; in fact the economy generally has worsened.

A ferry service was shown to be unviable then and it is certainly unviable now, so knock the idea on the head now.

We don't need to waste money on yet more consultants. If you don't believe me, spare a few minutes to ask local businessmen, financiers, bankers and accountants if they would invest in it.

There are more realistic transport solutions that are needed, deliverable and sustainable that we should spend money on. The West Somerset Cycle Network (Steam Coast Trail) is a case in point.

I love ferries and it would be brilliant to see one plying its trade from Minehead. It would add so much to the seaside ambience - but one has to be realistic.
