WATCHET Royal British Legion women’s section is commemorating the centenary of the end of World War One by dressing the town’s war memorial in hundreds of knitted poppies tomorrow (Saturday).

Cash-strapped Somerset Council spending £5 million on new laptops for staffIt was the brainchild of women’s section chairman Bernice Danby and the members, and is being put together by Marilyn Hill, Polly Banks, Janet Strong and Dee Mayo.
With the support of the town council and the memorial committee, the ladies set to hand-making hundreds of poppies – Jean Field knitted over 1100 poppies herself, along with some of the Phoenix Club ladies.
The drapes of bright red poppies will be on display until November 11 when the centenary will be commemorated with the town’s Remembrance Day parade following a week-long series of events to give respect to the fallen of the town and the nation.
