IT was best bib and tucker time when contestants and young hopefuls lined up for the annual selection of Watchet Carnival's 'royal' family. Would-be princes and princesses dressed in their best outfits for an evening of entertainment at the town's football club last week to hear if their name had been picked out of a box by last year's carnival queen Chloe Sax. Music was provided by Terry Woodward, who made sure everyone got into the party spirit. The successful youngsters were 11-year-old Dominic Howells and Ryan Perkins, aged eight, who will take on the role of princes, with Sasha Lanning, aged 12, and Courtney Duffield, eight, named as the princesses. They were all awarded commemorative medals and given special carnival T-shirts. The contest for the top job of carnival queen attracted a total of seven entries, with judges facing a tough task of selecting just two. Chairman of the panel Dave Westcott revealed that just six points split the first and last places and stressed that all the girls were of an extremely high standard, making the job very hard indeed. But eventually a new queen was crowned - 19- year-old Kimberley Bidwell, who was presented with a trophy and a £50 cheque. Her attendant was named as Laura Johnson, aged 14, who also received a trophy and £25. Carnival club spokesman Jackie Bale said both Kimberley and Laura would be involved in many carnival duties throughout the coming year and the club was looking forward to working with the pair to promote both this year's and the 2006 event. Mrs Bale also said the club wanted to thank Dave and Judy Chatfield, who had kindly bought a new carnival queen trophy in memory of their daughter Jade, in addition to a beautiful tiara and had been generous enough to agree to sponsor the 'give- away' trophies for forthcoming years.
