A DULVERTON restaurant has been singled out for its fine wines and top class dining in a double accolade.

Woods Bar and Restaurant has been named the national Wine Pub of the Year by the UK's top selling guide book, The Good Pub Guide 2011.

And the popular venue has also clinched the title of Somerset's Dining Pub of the Year.

Woods has scooped both prestigious titles twice before but this is the first time it has done the double in the same year.

Owner Paddy Groves, who runs the business with his wife Sally, said the accolades had been coming in alternate years since 2006.

"Obviously we are delighted to have now won both these awards in the same year," he said.

And Paddy puts the success down to team work and dedicated staff.

Chef Olivier Certain makes the most of locally sourced ingredients, including lamb, pork and poultry produced by Paddy himself at nearby Northcombe Farm.

The wines he sources himself, confessing that it is also a hobby and a passion.

"We have a great team here and let's face it, we couldn't win these awards year after year without being consistent all the time."

The Good Pub Guide is seen as the Oscars for publicans, with recommendations from customers making up the nomination list.

More than 2,000 regular correspondents send in their tips to the guide's editors and all the main entries are inspected anonymously by the editorial team.

Editor Fiona Stapley said: "Above all, what makes a good pub is its atmosphere. You should be able to feel at home there and feel not just that you're glad you've come but that they're glad you've come.

"A good landlord or landlady makes a huge difference - they can make or break a pub."

Woods is described in the guide as "a smartly informal place with exceptional wines and enjoyable food - a great favourite for a civilised meal.

"The wine list is extraordinarily good and they will open any of the 400 listed wines for you to have just a glass."
