A WILLITON woman getting married next year has been making plans for a very special wedding cake after winning a competition run by the West Somerset Free Press and cake maker Juliet of The Mixing Bowl in Minehead.

Donna Atkins was “very excited” when she heard she had won the competition in the Free Press’s Weddings supplement after deciding to give it a go earlier this year.

“I think there were some screams down the phone – the wedding cake can be one of the most expensive things and this takes that worry off your mind,” Donna told the Free Press.

The cake will be made by Juliet, who makes bespoke wedding and special occasion cakes, and specialises in gluten, wheat and dairy free ones.

Donna has now met with Juliet several times and is planning on three or four tiers of different flavour sponges, for what is known in the trade as a “naked wedding cake” which has a special decorative method using light buttercream instead of royal icing. It will be decorated with gypsophilia.

Donna and her fiance Justin Damerel will marry at St Etheldreda’s Church in St Audries in June next year.

The Mixing Bowl is a small, family run business and Juliet has over 20 years experience.
