WATCHET optometrist Judith Searle is flying to Zambia as part of a Vision Aid Overseas mission to teach how to fit and adjust glasses which have been donated by West Somerset well-wishers.

A director of Exmoor Eyecare, Judith volunteered for two weeks’ work in remote outreach clinics in Zambia for the VAO charity. She has previously done similar voluntary work in Ethiopia.

Co-director Daniel Searle said: “This is a very demanding and exhausting two weeks of volunteering. Families walk for miles simply to have a basic eye test that we take for granted in this country.

“Not only is Judith volunteering to work in Zambia but as VAO is a charity she has to contribute towards the cost of the trip.

“We are holding a coffee morning and bake-off at our Watchet branch on Wednesday (August 1) to raise money for the charity.”

Members of staff will show off their baking skills and ask for votes for a favourite cake and star baker from 9.30am onwards.
