SIR — Despite Cllr Westcott's personal views (Free Press June 10) I am sure that I am not the only Watchet resident who feels saddened by the imminent destruction of the paper mill chimney.

Not only is it an iconic feature of Watchet's skyline but it is a reminder of a once proud industrial heritage.

Thankfully, the paper mill is still in business and the modern improvements in manufacture have made this former vent redundant, but as a testament to an earlier generation of Watchet, whose building skills and pride in their work created such a lasting monument, this particular chimney will be greatly missed.
