SIR — Following recent letters about vehicle driving standards I tried obtaining information about traffic policing, but it seems straightforward questions to the authorities are avoided and the only way to pursue enquiries is through formal Freedom of Information requests. What a shame there is so little mutual trust these days that bureaucratic legislative processes have replaced common sense and goodwill. It would have been nice to have had a simple answer to my original question. All I was asking is why do we rarely see any reports of motorists being prosecuted for driving offences? The reason given by the police to justify road closures in the wake of road traffic incidents is that the area is being treated as a "crime scene", so it would not be unreasonable to expect some results from all these investigations. Maybe since the magistrates' court moved to Taunton cases are not reported locally, or some other explanation, but in the absence of relevant information the ratio of prosecutions to investigations seems remarkably low. Perhaps someone "official" could comment. J A S Dixon, Periton Road, Minehead.
