SIR — As a life-long resident of Minehead, I am totally against the proposed one-way system and we certainly don't want any further pedestrianisation in the town.

This new proposal will not cure any problems, only exasperate them by adding to them at other junctions.

I thought that the whole idea of the present set-up was to slow the traffic down. The proposals will only create rat runs in Blenheim Road, The Avenue, Bancks Street and Friday Street.

I was utterly surprised at Mayor Venner's comments and rather disappointed that we are not to have a public meeting on the aspects of this important subject.

It would appear that only the councillors, officers and four residents, all of whom live in Blenheim Road, are to discuss this. What sort of democracy is this?

Come on councillors, have a re-think before it is too late! We want Minehead to remain a flourishing town.

Just a few suggestions to take on board:

l Extend the bus stop outside Bastins in order to let the bus park properly.

The taxi spaces lost could be placed outside of the old Premier Garage showroom, which would save the shoppers at Co-Op, Quick-Save, etc, having to walk so far.

l Stop all 'U' turns in the Parade area as was promised.

l Make Clanville car park free. Office and shop workers may then park there.

l Make Blenheim Road/Martlett Road a 'two hours, no return in two hours' parking area and properly wardened. This would enable shoppers to park for a short period of time.

If we are not careful the shopping area will become a ghost area because there will be nowhere to park.

Other residents will obviously have other suggestions.

By the way that the councillors are treating the residents, I am sure that there will be a full house at the council's annual meeting in a few months' time.
