SIR — What a tragic accident involving a car and bicycle last Sunday during the Exmoor Beauty cycling event.

Our sympathies go out to both the rider and the car driver.

Surely it was an accident waiting to happen.

We were driving over the moors against the oncoming bicycles. Cars were overtaking them coming towards us. There were so many on the road, with not a marshal to be seen.

Locals were unaware of such a big event happening with so many riders taking part.

Next time, surely a rolling road block should be enforced as used for the Tour of Britain, therefore protecting both car and cyclist.
