SIR — I refer to the letter from Bruce Williams suggesting a Williton inner relief road (Free Press, May 17).

Notwithstanding my opposition to Mr Gliddon's proposals for a superstore, I can only infer that Mr Williams has not studied these proposals.

By demolishing the Co-Op store and unspecified adjacent premises, with consequent job losses, his proposed inner relief road would appear to be routed directly through the superstore car park.

The health and safety issues emanating from such a scenario do not bear thinking about.

He then proposes the demolition of Mamsey House. Did he bother to discuss this with the management company of Mamsey House, Clinida Care?

It would also appear that Mr Williams is unaware of the number of private dwellings between the police station and Mamsey House which would have to be demolished.

By effectively turning Fore Street into a pedestrian zone would access be permitted to residents of Fore Street? Access to the car park, petrol station, surgery/pharmacy are required at all times.

We are all aware of the difficulties currently being experienced by West Somerset Council, but in turning the offices into a civic centre what happens to the council? The concomitant traffic movement would make it imperative that Fore Street remain in its current layout.

Mr Williams mentions a potential urban sprawl with out of town superstores as exemplified by Minehead and the location of its Tesco and Morrisons superstores.

The Gliddon proposal is for a centrally located superstore which, if Mr Williams had not noticed, the rest of rural England is vehemently up in arms against.

As a construction cost consultant, I do not consider his financial proposals merit any comment.
