SIR — I would like to point out the very dangerous situation that exists in the narrow top end of West Street, Watchet.
The road narrows to one vehicle width and the pavement narrows to 18" wide at one point. Cars race through this narrow stretch and it is only a matter of time before someone is maimed or killed.
Already my dog has been killed here but I think myself lucky it was not one of my small children.
Old people are particularly vulnerable and there has been one instance of a car wing mirror hitting a pedestrian. Luckily the car was only travelling slowly at the time.

The only deterrent would be raised areas of tarmac either end of the narrow straight.
The cost would be minimal and the difference it would make to the safety of this end of Watchet would be enormous.
Should anything happen to anyone in the future I want it on record that I have informed, quite clearly, the situation to our chief constable and our local highways officer.
Should the installation of these 'speed bumps' be turned down on a cost basis, I would offer to do them myself. My firm is registered under the Streetworks Qualifications Register and is competent to do the work. The only other things West Somerset Highways would have to do would be signs and road markings.
I realise I have a vested interest in this situation, having a large family of small children, but I am sure the other residents of West Street would give their full support to a safer West Street.
