VISIONS for the future of Williton were met with a positive response by residents who looked at a study into the regeneration of the village.

Hundreds of people visited the Red Cross Centre at the weekend where drawings and plans were displayed by students from the University of the West of England.

Most people were impressed with the work and took on board the possible proposals for the village which included the A39 being diverted and Fore Street transformed into a pedestrianised area.

The students also came to the conclusion that West Somerset District Council has the space to keep its headquarters in the village to enable regeneration.

Williton Parish Council chairman Cllr Ian Aldridge said he was thoroughly pleased with the work put in by the students and the number of people who took the effort to have a look.

He said: "Nearly everyone who came to see the display were positive and were impressed with what the students have come up with.

"Plans to divert the A39 and turn Fore Street into a pedestrian area was very well received. I think it would be a good idea myself as it would let the village be seen in a pleasant light."

Mr Aldridge added: "Most people I spoke to were grateful to be given the chance for consultation. This was just preliminary research which was there to stimulate debate."
