SIR — I refer to the letter from Ian Aldridge (Free Press December 4) and wish to congratulate the people of Williton who, over the last 11 years, have provided the village hall project with a total of £100,000.
My problem with Mr Aldridge's letter is that he does not tell us how much is left in the fund and how the money has been spent.
It is now considered that access to the land purchased by the village hall committee will not be allowed and that planning permission to build a village hall on that site is unlikely to be given.
The land without permission to build would be worth only around £15,000. The purchase price was £70,000, to which must be added legal costs, the cost of constructing a boundary wall and architects' fees etc, around another £10,000.
There is therefore a shortfall of approximately £65,000.
Since this is public money and controlled by the Charity Commission, just how much is left in the fund towards the construction of a village hall?
A Pearson,
Whitecroft,
Williton.
