Husband and wife business partners Billy and Ellen Rowlinson have won three awards at the Bristol, Bath and Somerset Tourism Awards for their hotel and restaurant in Allerford, on the National Trust Holnicote estate.

They took over Cross Lane House in November 2019, so their first year of trading was particularly challenging.

But they have won a gold award in the Bath and Somerset’s new tourism business category, silver in the small hotel of the year and bronze in the dining experience of the year.

The prestigious industry awards which usually take place during a gala dinner event were hosted virtually.

Ellen said: “To have received this level of recognition in such prestigious awards has been so encouraging, especially after what has been a tough start to business.

“It has given us a huge boost to just keep on going! We are so proud of how far we come in this short space of time. We would like to take this opportunity to also thank our team and our suppliers – without them, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do”.

Billy said guests, customers and local community had “stuck by us” throughout the last 12 months, buying vouchers, booking advance stays, buying takeaways and telling friends: “We really do appreciate the support. We are super excited for our re-opening and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to enjoy all that Exmoor has on offer.”

Emma Thomasson, of Visit Exmoor which sponsored the awards, said: “We could not be prouder of our remarkable tourism businesses across the area.

“In a very challenging year, they have proved themselves to be robust and adaptable, operating at the highest of standards.”

Cross Lane House, a grade two listed property that dates back to 1545, has a commitment to home-grown and sustainability or locally sourced produce. It will be re-opening with an alfresco dining option for lunch, dinners and drinks throughout the summer April 15.
