A UNIQUE tribute has been paid at the under-construction Hinkley Point C nuclear power station to a crane operator who died suddenly at the weekend.

Work stopped as many of cranes on the construction site were lowered and pointed toward the empty rig of ‘Rocket’ Ronnie Jones for what was described as ‘a minute of recognition’.

Sirens and crane horns were also sounded by colleagues across the site while the moving tribute was held.

Hinkley Point C delivery director Nigel Cann said: “This touching tribute by our crane operators demonstrates the affection and high esteem in which Ronnie was held by us all.

“His sudden passing has been a real shock and we will miss the contribution Ronnie made, not just to the project itself, but to the spirit of teamwork and community that exists across the site.

“Our thoughts are with Ronnie’s family, friends, and colleagues at this sad time.”

Mr Jones, who worked for Hinkley’s main contractor Bylor, is survived by his brother Alan and sister-in-law Angela.

Bylor said Mr Jones was a valued member of the nuclear island crane team.

Lifting operations manager Darren Loveridge said: “Ronnie was a much-loved member of the team. His crazy antics and cheeky, bright smile will be greatly missed.”

Colleagues and people who had previously worked with Mr Jones paid tributes on social media, describing him as ‘a big character’ loved by many across the site.

Mark Rice said: “In my time at Hinkley Point C I have met some great guys, ‘The Rocket’ being one of them. RIP Ronnie, a true character gone way too soon.”

Andrei Constantinescu said: “I am glad I had the opportunity to work with a legend.”

Geraint Cullen said: “What a great tribute by the whole lifting team. Ronnie was a big part of the lifting team and will be missed by so many.”
