HINKLEY Point C plans to increase its peak workforce from the original 2012 projection of 5,600 to about 8,500 once Covid-19 restrictions are lifted, and will be looking to recruit local workers, Hinkley bosses revealed this week.

An HPC spokesman said: “Discussions with local authorities have been ongoing since early last year. We would stress that the increase in numbers on site will only happen once we are out of coronavirus restrictions. Most of the new workers will be recruited locally and be home-based, so demand on accommodation and other services will be limited.”

HPC delivery director Nigel Cann added: “Right now, we’re focussed on keeping the community and our workforce safe. Once it is possible to work normally again, we forecast that around 8,500 people will be employed here during peak construction.

“This is good news for economic recovery in the area as most of these jobs will be filled by local people, helped into these roles by local colleges and training providers.

“The opportunities available throughout the construction of the new power station can be accessed whether people are in school, exploring new careers or considering wider training routes such as apprenticeships.

“With so many of these recruits set to be home-based, demand on accommodation

and other services can be managed successfully by working with local councils and the community.

“We have also reviewed our transport plans and are confident that vehicle numbers, including buses, will remain below our original forecast.”
