WEST Somerset Council has agreed to release another £50,000 from its Hinkley Point C funding pot to support a trio of tourist information centres in the district and tourism activities across the county.

Almost half of the money, some £20,000 will be allocated by the district council to support tourist information centres in Minehead, Porlock and Watchet.

Of that, the bulk will go to Minehead - £15,000 – with Porlock set to receive £4,000 and Watchet £1,000.

Sedgemoor District Council will also receive £20,000 to support tourism activities in Bridgwater, Cheddar and Burnham-on-Sea, while £10,000 will be given to Somerset County Council, pending a business plan, towards digital information boards and a tourist information centre on the A303.

The funding allocations were approved at last Wednesday’s full council meeting.

The funds will come from money paid by Hinkley C developer EDF Energy for tourism projects to offset the impact of its site preparation works.

Cllr Karen Mills, the council’s lead member for regeneration and economic growth, said: “Tourist information centres are vital assets to our communities and the businesses they support.”
