FOUR years of determined effort paid off for gardener Alan Coles when he won the championship cup at Wootton Courtenay Gardening Club's annual show. It was the club's fourth revived annual produce and flower show in the Village Hall and the first time that Alan had won the Wootton Courtenay Garden Club Cup. The numbers of exhibitors in both the adult and junior classes were slightly down on last year, but the continued rise in the standard of the exhibits more than compensated for this. The onion and potato classes, in particular, were praised as outstanding, as were the two sweet pea classes. The theme for the main flower arrangement class this year was 'This Sporting Life' which disappointingly only attracted one entry. However, Pat Leach's exhibit was described by the judge as "a wonderful and beautiful" interpretation of the theme. As always, the cookery and preserve classes were well supported, and Pat Morgan gained five firsts in as many entries. The fine skills of Maxine Garner were again much in evidence in the handicraft section. Desmond Meikle presented the cups and prizes.
