NURSE Denise Norman has raised £274 for Minehead Stroke Club in appreciation for the support given to her husband, Tom.

She rallied support from local businesses and organised a knock-out pool competition which led up to a final on a fundraising night in Alcombe Village Hall.

Highlights of the event included an auction of some works of art created by Tom, who died almost a year ago having suffered a stroke.

There was also a disco run by West Somerset district Cllr Jamie Anderson.

Denise, a staff nurse at Minehead Hospital, said: "I was very pleased with how it all went and how much was raised for what is such a good cause.

"Everyone gave so generously with local businesses giving donations and gifts. The Wellington Hotel gave a meal for two, a veg shop gave a basket of fruit and Woolworth's, Bastins and Boots and many more donated."

Denise, of Sycamore Road, Minehead, said she was hoping to build on the success of the Stroke Club fund-raising night and turn it into an annual event.

She is pictured in the centre with the steward's wife Anne Dyer on the left and Hilary May of Minehead Stroke Club holding one of Tom's pieces of work.
