SIR — Drivers approaching the Washford Cross roundabout from Minehead will notice they no longer have to look at the ugly billboard which had been set up in a field adjacent to the roundabout for several weeks.
I contacted the council’s planning enforcement officer about the billboard and eventually a notice to remove the sign was served and we are now able to enjoy our beautiful countryside free from an ugly advertising sign.
I am writing to encourage others to notify the council if this type of unofficial billboard appears in our area (usually in a farmer’s field, facing a busy road).
Temporary signs advertising local events are, of course, fine, but I am sure we do not want to end up with a landscape despoiled by a proliferation of billboards as can be seen, for example, in the USA, France and Italy.
