EXMOOR’S annual hedge laying competition for high quality work for the benefit of farming, wildlife and landscape is open for entries.
The park authority’s competition is aimed at the landowners, managers and contractors who actually carry out the hedge-laying work.
To be eligible, all or part of the farm must be within Exmoor National Park and the hedge laid during the winter of 2016/17.
There will be two classes, open and novice, and the winner of each will receive £200 with £100 going to runners-up and £50 to third place.

Work carried out during the autumn and winter has resulted in a considerable transformation along many lanes and field edges, as once-shady, outgrown hedges are cut and laid.
This traditional management is crucial in order to rejuvenate the hedgerows, reflecting Exmoor’s cultural heritage and supporting a wide range of wildlife.
The work is very skilled and provides winter employment for numerous people on the moor.
The competition is sponsored by the Exmoor Trust, and chairman Susan May said she would encourage all hedge layers to enter.
The deadline for entries is May 2. Forms should be submitted together with at least one photo of the completed hedge. For further information or an entry form contact Heather Harley, Exmoor National Park Authority conservation officer for farming and land management, on 01398 323665 or email [email protected].
