WET weather forced some amendments to services to remember the fallen on Remembrance Sunday (November 9) but failed to dampen spirits as residents across West Somerset and Exmoor turned out in large numbers.

In Minehead, people gathered in Wellington Square for a morning service outside St Andrew’s Church led by the Revs Philip and Michelle Butcher, before services later in the day at the war memorials in, first, Alcombe, and then on North Hill.

Members of the Minehead branch of the Royal British Legion and the town’s Armed Forces and Veterans Breakfast Club were prominent, and contingents of local brownies, cubs, and scouts also attended.

A town council spokesperson said: “Today, we pause to honour and remember all those who gave their lives in service of our country, and all who continue to serve in the pursuit of peace.

“Their courage, sacrifice, and dedication will never be forgotten.

“Let us take a moment to reflect, to give thanks, and to ensure their memory lives on through our actions and our gratitude.”

In Watchet, the heavy rain forced the laying of wreaths to take place inside the town’s Methodist Church instead of around the Harbour Road war memorial.
